Feeding Evaluation and Therapy
If your child is a picky eater or problem feeder, we are here to help! At SpeechRise, we have clinicians trained in the Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) approach to feeding therapy. This method uses play to help work your child up a feeding hierarchy, exploring and interacting with a variety of preferred and non preferred foods. The ultimate goal of SOS therapy is for your child to become more comfortable interacting and learning about a variety of foods. This in turn will increase their likelihood to consume new foods! Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Speech Therapy
How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
Common signs include limited vocabulary for their age, difficulty being understood by unfamiliar listeners, trouble following directions, or frustration when trying to communicate. If you're unsure, a speech and language evaluation is the best way to get a clear answer — we're always happy to talk it through first on a consultation call.
What age should a child start talking?
Most children say their first words around 12-14 months and begin combining words into short phrases by 24 months. Every child develops at their own pace, but if your toddler isn't meeting these general milestones, it's worth having them evaluated rather than waiting to "see if they catch up."
Does insurance cover speech therapy?
Coverage varies by plan and provider. As an out-of-network concierge practice, we provide a superbill that many families use for insurance reimbursement — reach out and we can walk you through what that looks like for your specific plan.
What happens during a speech and language evaluation?
An evaluation typically runs about 90 minutes and includes clinical observation, a parent/caregiver interview, and standardized assessment. You'll walk away with a clear picture of your child's current skills and specific next steps.
What is a "late talker" and how is it different from a speech disorder?
A late talker is a toddler who is behind in expressive vocabulary but otherwise developing typically in every other area. Some late talkers catch up on their own, while others benefit from early intervention — an evaluation is the only way to know which situation your child is in, and earlier support tends to lead to better outcomes.
Do you offer in-home speech therapy in NYC and the Hamptons?
Yes — SpeechRise provides in-home speech, language, and feeding therapy throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Hamptons, and the North Fork of Long Island, so your child can work with a therapist in the comfort of their own environment.
What is feeding therapy and does my picky eater need it?
Feeding therapy helps children who struggle with picky eating, sensory sensitivities around food, or difficulty expanding the variety of foods they'll accept. We use the SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) approach, which uses play to gradually build comfort with new foods rather than forcing them.
